Denis Smith RIP.

On the 20th November 2017, Dr Denis Smith passed away after finally succumbing to the effects of Alzheimer’s.

Denis had been playing music for many forms of folk dancing from as far back as the late 50’s contributing to many recordings and influencing many of his fellow musicians. For many years, Denis was the main musician for the Westminster Morris Men and I believe that his music was fundamental in the development of Westminster’s high standards and style of dance and without his influence, Westminster would have been a very different team for which they owe a debt of gratitude.

Dr. Denis Smith

I was fortunate to have known Denis and I have both learnt from, and danced to his unique playing.

Thank you for your music and friendship, I will miss you.

Thank you for your lovely piece in EDS about Denis Smith. It took me right back to the 1963 Sidmouth folk festival, and dancing along the prom to the Connaught Gardens, listening to Denis playing Spanish Ladies. I can hear it now… I greatly admired his musicianship and his close observance of the dancers, and was so sorry to hear he had died and had a rough time with Altzheimers. He will be much missed in the folk and morris world.
